West Bank Weekend Events - March 28-30, 2008

Looking for something to do this weekend on the West Bank of New Orleans?  Check out some of these great, local events.

Recycling Day  recycle

Saturday, 3/29/08,  9 am to noon at the Jefferson Parish Governmental Building, 200 Derbigny St. in Gretna, LA.

Volunteers will be accepting:  Plastic 1-7, paper, phone books, magazines, cardboard, paper board, shredded paper in plastic bags, and metal cans and lids.  ARC of Greater New Orleans will be collecting beads to recycle at same time. 

When you are finished at Recycling Day, don't forget to stop by the Gretna Farmer's Market between 8:30 am and 12:30 pm to pick up this weeks fresh produce!

Super Saturday Algiers Community Fair

10 am to 2 pm at Edna Karr High School, 3332 Huntlee Drive in Algiers

  • Free health screenings
  • Free computer technology sessions
  • Free counseling for college bound students and their parents
  • School band performances
  • Free lunch at noon in the school cafeteria

Saturday, 3/30/08, 1-5 pm.   No appointments are needed, but all dogs must be on leashes and all cats must be in carriers.  With so many locations open this weekend, it's a breeze to protect those furry family members!

Crawfish Boil

Mount Olivet Church is holding it's annual crawfish boil on Sunday, 3/30/08, from 11:30 am to 4 pm.  530 Pelican Ave, Algiers Point.  There will also be a Bake sale and  beverages available.  Plates are a bargain at only $10 per person.

A Studio in the Woods Open House

Sunday 3/30/08  1-5 pm

Dedicated to preserving endangered hardwood forests and providing a serene environment for resident artists to work in, A Studio in the Woods will be holding an open house this Sunday with the following activities:

  • Presentations by artists, filmmakers and composers
  • Tours of the forest
  • Sustainable building technique workshop
  • Kid's art activities

Don't miss the native irises that are in bloom right now!

 

West Bank Art Guild

Saturday, 11 am to 4 pm and Sunday, 1-4 pm at the Westwego Art Center.  The Art Guild is presenting the Young Artists Exhibit.  401 Sala Avenue in Westwego.

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans

The West Bank PGA event continues through this weekend.  With the forecast in the upper 70s, don't forget your sunscreen while enjoying the tournament.

 

Upcoming events:

3/31/2008  7 pm.  Second Good Hope Baptist Church, 800 Elmira Avenue in Algiers Point.  The Algiers Group community meeting will have speakers addressing the topics of the Federal City development at the Naval Support Activity in Algiers and the proposed redevelopment of the Village Aurora Shopping Center.

4/3/2008  7 pm.  Algiers Point Association meeting at the Holy Name of Mary cafeteria.  Topic for this months meeting is an overview of the Federal City plans, with questions and answers from Retired Marine Corps Maj. Gen. David Mize and New Orleans City Council member Jackie Clarkson.

4/5/2008  Treasures from the Point, the annual spring porch sale in Algiers Point with over 30 sale locations signed up so far.  If you live in or near the Point and would like to participate, call Connie Burks at (504) 491-1002.
