New Orleans Real Estate News: Porches on the Point

Porches on the Point

I love porches...they are the perfect place to sit back, relax and watch the world (or at least your little part of it!) go by.  A good front porch can be hard to find if you live in an area that was built in the 60s or 70s, like many of our West Bank communities were.

While porches are making a comeback in new construction, my favorites are still the originals that set the standard in our city.  The ones that draw you in and invite you to have a seat and visit...

Take a walk with me through historic Algiers Point, where fabulous porches abound, in all shapes, sizes and decorating styles.

Hey, Lisa. Porches say a lot about the home and it's owners. Not to mention, it is the 1st impression for home buyers. Thanks for sharing and I hope that you have a great weekend, Jim

Interesting blog subject.

At my mom's house, where I grew up, one of the most enjoyable things I used to do, before I had my driver's license, was sit on the front porch watching the cars go by. The porch was concrete, no rails. Just concrete a few metal poles to hold the roof up and a porch swing.  My dad used to sit on the porch watching the cars go by for hours. I kinda got it from him. He had Lupus, diabetes, kidney failure, etc. and so he wasn't able to do much after a certain point. Sitting on the porch was his pastime.

Similarly, sitting on the porch and talking to neighbors is what people used to do decades ago. I read an article a few months ago that the television changed American social life. Instead of talking to neighbors and going out to have fun everyone began sit inside with their family or by themselves and watch TV. Their social life was changed dramatically.

Hi Lisa,

A porch adds so much to the invitation a home offers and says so much about those that dwell inside.

You pictures and video bring back many fond hometown memories. Thank you for taking the time.

Lisa, I love a great porch too!  I lived for 6 years in a turn-of-the century Victorian outside of Boston with a big front porch complete with an old-fashioned bench swing.

Sometime around the time that family life and housebuilding trends started centering on the backyard patio, deck, enclosed balconies, etc., neighborhood life and friendly trusting American communities started to decline.  Nice to see some wonderful front porch living still exists in Algiers Point.

A front porch makes for a friendlier neighborhood.  It forces you to be friendly to the neighbors rather than insulating your family from the world.

Lisa one good thing about Algiers those old homes have porches and a lot of character.  My suburban home is just boring looking.

Kevin, thanks for visiting!

Jim, that initial impression by the buyer can make or break the sale of a home.  I'm pretty sure that anyone would love to have one of these porches to call their own!

Kim, thank you :)

Bill, I love to sit on the porch to this day.  Mine is not nearly as pretty as these, but I do get to enjoy my garden and watch the goings-on in the neighborhood.  Much better than sitting in front of the TV.

Hal, thank you for taking the time to stop in and sit with me :)

Mel, thanks!

Brian, there are gorgeous turn-of-the-century homes throughout Algiers Point and some of the most inviting porches you'll find anywhere.  It must have been hard for you to leave yours behind.

John, LOL...apples and oranges when comparing historic homes to newer ones, isn't it?

I would love, love, love to have a big front porch. I like being connected to the neighborhood, and you feel isolated on a back deck sometimes.

Dez, I love the second one!  The outdoor drapes just give it a very cool feel and make you want to move in...

Georgina, :)

Kelly, a huge porch is on my must-have list when I get to build my dream home!

Lisa I am a big fan of porches myself. Some of them are built too narrow. I like the ones where you can actually fit a piece of furniture on them and still have plenty of space.

Awesome. I love the video. I just ordered a Flip but it's not here yet. Some of the simpler porches remind me of Southport. It's that Southern thing. Loved the background music too! Delta blues?

Bill, those are my favorites too!  I'm always impressed when someone takes the time to decorate their porch like it's another room in the house - what a way to welcome guests :)

Vicki, I did that with still shots and Real Estate Shows. You should check them out...inexpensive and oh so easy.  I have the Flip too, but I haven't created anything worth sharing yet!
