Beware This New Orleans Home Owner Scam

If there's one thing you can say about scam artists, it's that they are nothing if not creative and persistent.

We received an email from one of our clients that purchased a West Bank home last year. She's been getting repeated notices that she should request a copy of her deed and property profile and decided to ask us if this was something she was supposed to do.

Thank goodness she did, because this is nothing more than a scam targeting new home owners that might not know any better. If you just glanced at this, you might assume that it's a legitimate deal. We know better.

How do we know it's a scam?

There is no official State Record Regulation Department in Louisiana
We don't have Grant Deeds in Louisiana
The information they offer to provide in their "Property Profile" is already contained in the documents received by the home owner at the act of sale
If it was an official state organization, they would know that we have parishes, not counties

Reading a little further, you'll see that they eventually admit that it's a solicitation for services. Services in the amount of $87 for a copy of your address and legal description? C'mon, man.

This should be a crime.

New Orleans Homestead Exemptions No Longer Need Renewal

I must have been asleep when the Louisiana Legislature passed La. R.S. 47:1703:1 last year, but I certainly became aware of it when I received the nicest letter from the Orleans Parish Assessor's Office.

Dear Homeowner, Our records indicate that you have successfully applied for and received a 2012 Homestead Exemption. This letter is to notify you that this Exemption is now permanent as long as your current address remains your home in Orleans Parish....

No more filling out those little cards annually and making sure they are mailed or returned to the Assessor in a timely manner. This should help eliminate the lines of folks who insist on bringing their exemptions in person, freeing up staff to focus on other tasks. Of course, the standard rules still apply to homestead exemptions:

You may claim only one exemption
Your exemption applies to your domicile only - your permanent, personally owned residence
Assessment freezes are available for those with a gross income of less than $67,670 AND are 65 years or older or have a permanent disability or a military disability greater than 50%

2012 French Quarter Festival Was the Biggest Yet

In the Times-Picayune, they are reporting that the crowds at this years French Quarter Festival were the biggest ever. The festival has grown from a small, local event that took place on one day to the current 4 day extravaganza that stretches along the riverfront and spills into the streets of the Quarter.

I had a chance to get out there on Thursday and Friday and I'm so glad I took the time to grab my camera before heading out the door...

Crowds in Jackson Square

This band pulled a little guy from the crowd - and he could blow that trombone!

A little something for everyone, with different genres of music from one end of the Quarter to the other

Jackson Square was a popular place since it not only had a stage for bands, but plenty of food and drink booths too

The Cajun Zydeco Stage in front of the Aquarium - we stopped to listen to the Jimmy Thibodeaux Band and catch the cool breeze that was blowing along the river front

If you've never been to New Orleans, then you might not know that April is one of the best times of the year to visit. Spectacular weather, festivals and fairs every weekend and a chance to get away from it all in one of the coolest cities in America.

Paws on Parade: Finding the Bead Dogs Across New Orleans

Have you seen the bead dogs scattered throughout New Orleans and Metairie? Finding them is like embarking on an artistic treasure hunt all over the city.

The official name is Paws on Parade and the project is designed to raise awareness of animal needs and welfare in the area. At the end of the parade (in September) many of the sculptures will be auctioned off to raise funds for LA SPCA.

From the SPCA website:

What is a Mardi Gras Bead Dog®? A tradition among generations of New Orleanians, children create Bead Dogs from discarded Mardi Gras throws. A few twists and turns transform a necklace of beads into a fun trinket to enjoy. Haydel’s Bakery adopted the Mardi Gras Bead Dog® as their mascot and has graciously donated the sculpture’s mold to promote the LA/SPCA’s mission.

With almost 50 sculptures out and about, there are even 2 of them on the West Bank. One is greeting visitors at the Algiers Ferry Landing and the other is standing guard outside the SPCA building on L.B. Landry in Algiers.

I've been on the lookout for these colorful creations ever since I spotted the first one a couple of weeks ago. You can always cheat and follow this map if you don't want to wait to stumble across them, but what's the fun in that?
